WordPress is a very good tool, used by a huge number of sites. The right question isn't which one is best, but which one suits your situation.
What WordPress does well
There are countless themes and plugins, and plenty of providers know it. If you enjoy getting into the technical side and your need is a common one, it's a serious option.
What to plan for
A WordPress site needs maintenance. The software, the theme and each plugin all receive updates, and one update can sometimes break another. You also have to choose hosting and think about backups. If nobody is in charge of this, the site ages and becomes vulnerable. Many hacked sites are simply forgotten sites.
When custom makes sense
- Your need doesn't fit the existing plugins.
- You want an administration limited to what you use, with no pointless menus.
- You don't want to deal with the technical side.
- Your site really has to look like you.
How to choose
Ask yourself two questions: who will look after the site in two years' time, and what particular things does it have to do? If you can answer the first and have nothing particular for the second, WordPress may be enough. Otherwise, a site designed for you and maintained by the person who built it will be less to worry about.
